Samsung SE-S084C Slim External DVD Burner

My wife's DVD burner in her Acer Power mini desktop failed to burn DVD recently. She has been nagging me to look into the problem but I have just ignored her calls, until she's away for an overseas trip.

So, I went down to Low Yat Plaza, first looking at whether able to find a replacement internal slot loading DVD burner. Found one shop, selling at RM200 per unit.

Well, judging at the price of external burners, which I found within the range of RM179 to RM289, why should I then go for an internal burner, although it is slot loading, but this is not the main concern.

The main concern is portability. Wife's MacBook Air is on her shopping list, I am using a MacBook and nothing else. She has got 2 Windows Desktops, a white label DIY stuff (by me, of course), and an Acer Power.

I do not want to have a burner, in fact I seldom use CD lately. Everything is transmitted either via network, broadband, 3G, or thumb drive. CD/DVD is already a past tense to me. Was even thinking of removing the DVD combo drive from my MacBook for a second HD :)

However, occasionally I may need to archive my work, documents, presentations, technical information, source codes, etc. Portable DVD burner comes handy.

After 2 rounds of visits to Low Yat, I finally settled with Samsung's SE-S084C external slim DVD burner.

The price, as well as Mac logo on its box, makes me decided on this unit. Although LG external burner looks better, but I am not able to ascertain whether LG works for MAC OSX.

The cheapest I found in Low Yat is RM210 for the Samsung SE-S084C, some selling at RM219, some even selling at RM249, but there are all the same make and model.

Brought home the burner, did a brief test. Burner is quiet as compare to the existing slot loading Mashita UJ-85JS on the Acer Power, and my MacBook's Mashita drive too.

Burning is surprisingly fast on my MacBook, athough the burner connects to my MacBook via USB, burning a backup DVD of 1.7GB, some 20,000 files, took around 3 minutes using Finder.

I am yet to test on the Acer Power, but I think the speed should be identical regardless of host and OS.

If you ask whether I am happy with the burner, I would say YES.

Recalling another favourate - Bob Dylan's Blowing in the wind

I first heard of this song when I was teen, one of my uncle, who collected books and albums that brought me up. And I got to know Dylan from his collection.

It is Teoh Beng Hock's tragic event that made me revisit this song, and I dedicate this song to Teoh, hope that his death will end the most cruel, cold-blooded age of the country where we were born, and raised.

How many roads must a man walk down
Before you call him a man?
Yes, 'n' how many seas must a white dove sail
Before she sleeps in the sand?
Yes, 'n' how many times must the cannon balls fly
Before they're forever banned?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind,
The answer is blowin' in the wind.

How many years can a mountain exist
Before it's washed to the sea?
Yes, 'n' how many years can some people exist
Before they're allowed to be free?
Yes, 'n' how many times can a man turn his head,
Pretending he just doesn't see?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind,
The answer is blowin' in the wind.

How many times must a man look up
Before he can see the sky?
Yes, 'n' how many ears must one man have
Before he can hear people cry?
Yes, 'n' how many deaths will it take till he knows
That too many people have died?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind,
The answer is blowin' in the wind.

Will the truth be buried?

I attended the Teoh Beng Hock Memorial earlier tonight took place at the Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall.

There were around 2000 packed in the hall where the ceremony took place, where speakers slammed the recent decision of the Government forming a Royal Commision of Inquiry to conduct investigation on MACC's procedure, whether it violated Teoh's human rights;

Inquest is to set up to study Teoh's death based on the investigation of the Police.

It is, for many of us who attended the memorial to pay last respect to a man who probably the last on earth to kill himself, yet the 'Honorable' Minister in the Prime Minister Department Nazri was quoted as "can't he jump himself?"

People agnry not because Teoh died. People angry because None in the Government has express sincere attitude on the inccident.

People don't really care whether you are Barisan Nasional or Pakatab Rakyat but ONE life lost needlessly (quoted Guan Eng) that nothing can be done to bring him back alive. But isn't Teoh deserves justice for his death? Isn't his family have the rights to know why he died? isn't the public has the rights to know if it is wrongdoing on the part of MACC or someone behind the whole episode of the drama, that deserve punishment fit for what they have done?

Instead of restoring faith towards the authority, we see these people keep creating unrest that only Malaysian are so patient to allow them doing what they wanted.

Back in 2007, Batu Buruk, Trengganu, a young man was shot by (who else is licensed gun carrier?) the Police and nearly die. Is there a justice for him? Is the person who shot him been punished according to our esteem Laws of Malaysia?

Earlier this year we witnessed A Kugan, a suspect found dead in Police custody that the priliminary optosy revealed that the young man died of fluid in lung that cost his life.

Kugan was later found that the young man was tortured with wounds almost every part of his body.

The Government later announced that the 11 Police officers at the scene during the death of Kugan to be transferred to the Police HQ. No action taken, nothing happen since then besides a inquest to be established to ascertain
Kugan's death.

The Government does not seems to understand after so many inccidents that the general public have lost their faith on the authority, especially the enforcement institutions, and still insist that the Police investigation to be the one and only reference for all the cases I mentioned above.

Or do they have something to hide? I dunno.

When will this LDP flyover falling apart?

I received an email from a friend with the following URL

http://bolehlandconstruction.blogspot.com/2009/06/ldp-puchong-jaya-interchange-major.html

I am just wondering why there isn't any news on such a major problem that may risk thousands of life committing on the flyover, not even the LDP nor the Highway Authority issuing any alert on this.

If this is false, why no one ever counter such a problem? Except for highway operator getting their contractors trying to remedy the situation?

It is all of us to be blamed for letting an oppoturnity gone to rectify what has gone wrong since the Independence.

It is too obvious that all these were to be covered up even if it risks thousands of lives and families.

So all of you, me included, will have to take the consequences if any unwanted event were to take place. And we are all murderers for those who are unfortunate enough to hit the block.

We can already expect what will come out from the Authority: "Act of God".

Well, God is to be blamed too as far as they are concern, besides people like us, who prefer status quo worrying that rocking the boat will lead us nowhere.

But there will be no one responsible for those who approved, built, operates, and monitor the said construction, ever.

HE IS GOD - He knows what's happening during the last hours of Teoh Beng Hock

Mohd Zaini Hassan of Utusan is "GOD" who claimed to have knowledge of what's happening during the last hours of Teoh Beng Hock before found death?

Or is he is merely playing the role of God and HE IS NO GOD?

If he is GOD, then why we need MACC & Police or even PM?

PS
I have no intention to smear the name of GOD but I just cannot understand why someone like this is allowed to write as if he is GOD in an influential media so to speak.

Selangor Oh Selangor 2: Apa ada dalam notebookBeng Hock?

Kisah Teoh Beng Hock, 30, amat tragik. Ia jarang-jarang berlaku dalam politik tanah air.

Semuanya terjadi pertengahan minggu lalu semasa SPRM memulakan satu siasatan mengejut.

Perlukah suruhanjaya siasatan ditubuhkan?

Downgrading iPhone 3.1 Beta 2 to iPhone 3.0

It was a pain to be one of the first to upgrade to iPhone 3.1 beta 2.

I was having iPhone 3.0 Gold Master, which is essentially the released version, about a week before the official released date.

iPhone 3.1 beta 1 came around 1 week later, and I have decided to upgrade my iPhone 3G, hoping that it will improve further the battery life.

After upgrading to iPhone 3.1 beta 2, knowingly that it is a beta copy meant for developers to take advantage of some new features on the 3GS. I was hoping that battery life can get better.

My past experience with iPhone 3.0 betas have been quite smooth sailing, only minor issues, which does not disrupt my daily usage.

This push me to try out iPhone 3.1 beta 1. It was pretty unstable, tends to hang if you are still in the midst of accessing the Internet and turn off the screen, the phone will just hang with black screen. Perhaps many times I received missed calls due to this erratic behavior.

After struggling for a week, finally beta 2 came. I presumed that it will solve the hang issue, and probably some hidden enhancement which may make my iphone 3G works better, I decided to go for it.

That was the first day of beta 2 release, there's no news on any possible problem I may have encountered. Desperate, thus I did it in the evening.

After apply the beta 2 firmware as an updates manually, I discovered that tethering (allowing iPhone to be used as 3G modem when connecting to my MacBook) is gone.

I thought this is perhaps a glitch that I did during the update process, I tried again, no luck.

Then I decided to wipe out everything on my iPhone, and do a complete restore.

iPhone restore is relatively painless. I never loose any piece of information if I need to do a complete restore earlier, except for accounts setup for Twitterific, and some apps that I frequently use.

Ok, I did a restore. Tethering not there.... I was pretty annoyed, and guess it is probably the carrier bundle settings that is causing the problem.

So I enabled iTunes to allow carrier bundles to be installed to my iPhone, built a clean carrier bundle for Celcom, my ISP.

No luck, MMS works, 3G on the iPhone works, but not tethering.

Then I tried to understand what contains in the carrier bundle and why it doesn't work.

In the midst of finding out what's going on, I happened to have a Maxis 3G SIM, of which I borrowed from my office. Maxis is the official carrier for iPhone in Malaysia.

When I pop in Maxis 3G SIM, tethering comes back. But when I turned to Celcom 3G SIM, it goes off.

Well, there must be something Apple did on the carrier bundle for Maxis and other official carriers that my custom made Celcom 3G bundle does not have.

At first I thought it may be Apple blocking non Apple carrier over the air. But I quickly dismissed this probability, since it will be stupid for Apple to block such features.

Apple's intention is to protect carriers from user abusing the tethering feature without paying, if carrier decided to charge.

This is not the case in Malaysia where carriers do not limit subscribers to only accessing internet with their phones only. All carriers here allow users to tether without additional fee.

I have practically tried all possible values specified in APN entries, APN entries are the reference to connect to different part of carrier's cellular data network, which defines the type of activities you can do with. Celcom 3G has only 1 APN to define, i.e. celcom3g

After a few nights and days over the weekend trying to solve the puzzle, surfing, tweeting, IRC, trying to find a fix but not available.

I am pretty sure after all the googling and digesting documents, web pages, etc that I can find, it is still carrier bundle that plays the tricks. And this time, I realised that I need the iPhone 3.1 beta 2 carrier bundle as a sample, to compare with what I had.

Calling for help on twitter brought @zwaldowski who sent me a link to the 3.1 b2 bundle files.

Open up, look for Maxis_my bundle, yes, I discovered there's an additional entry, i.e. signature, on each APN entries.

Open up other carrier's bundle gave me the same result. I know this is beyond my ability to try cracking the signature. Hence I started to look for ways to downgrade back to iPhone 3.0.

Apple has always warn developers not to downgrade their iPhone, claimed iPhone may bricked if downgraded.

I was very worry as this is the only phone I have now, if I screwed up, I will need to fork out another RM2K to get a new iPhone 3G or 3GS.

And for all reason I am trying to avoid using Maxis due to its performance at my home as in my previous posts.

Twitter comes to rescue again. I did a search on twitter to look for iphone downgrade and I found @SpaceFlightO mentioned that he downgraded from 3.1 b2 to 3.0.

When I asked him how he done it, he posted the instruction he created here.

Following his instruction, I got my iPhone back to 3.0 final and tethering works great now. I am in fact writing this post using iPhone tether.

Teo Beng Hock vs MACC

Tan Sri DIGP, yes, we should not speculate, but we have been going thru reports after reports, one after another died in authority's custody, and yet, there's no conclusion as to who is responsible.

If following the MACC's style of investigation, where all Pakatan representatives are investigated for alleged mis-appropriate of public fund, isn't the Police should detain all MACC staff in Selangor HQ that a person died within its vicinity?

Why there's no action when A huge Balinese Palace standing at the hillside of the Royal Selangor's Palace so visible yet nothing happened?

Why there's nothing happen to Ligam's tape? Nothing happen to PKFZ scandal?

If all done in transparent manner, the public will not speculate. The general public will only speculate when there's insufficient information, or a clear cut fraud but was deliberately covered up, or someone plays David Copperfield's trick.

Please don't tell us Teo, Kugan, and many that died under your care, or the Authority's care, are Hudini in disguise. How would you expect us to believe heartedly your report when you cannot even tell us, or tell your ownself, the truth.

Do you think God will believe your report? Let's see.

Bernama news below:

KUALA LUMPUR, July 17 – Police have urged the public not to speculate on the death yesterday of Teoh Beng Hock, police secretary to a Selangor Exco member.

Deputy Inspector General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar said all quarters should wait for the investigation report and not jump to conclusion.

“We will do the autopsy this morning. Please wait until the autopsy is completed,” he told a press conference after closing a seminar for chemical diversion investigators here today.

Ismail hopes that the autopsy report would provide clues on Teoh’s death and that the investigation was done according to legal procedures.

The motive for the incident will only be known when investigation is completed.

Asked why four pathologists were involved in the investigation, Ismail said the police were using all resources at their disposal.

“It is normal for us to seek assistance from others. I have yet to receive any report on the incident from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC),” he said.

Teoh, 30, was found dead in the corridor of level five at Plaza Masalam, Shah Alam which houses the Selangor MACC office, eight hours after giving statements on alleged abuse of government allocation. – Bernama

WHO IS THE MURDERER? ACT OF GOD? AGAIN?

We can predict what will be the outcome.

I am utterly shock of what happened, but I am not surprise that this will be settled with NFA (no further action) since there's "no evidence" (read above).

This is not the first time, and it will never be the last too.

How many death before Malaysian wake up and break away this curse?

Will the "not my business" attitude that solve the problem?

If you are still ignorant, don't care, and "nothing to do with me" kind of attitude, that someone died, not me, not my family, not my friend, SO WHAT?!

May God bless that it will happen to you one day and don't then cry for help as it is what you deserved.

I CURSE YOU ALL
FOR ALLOWING MURDERERS AT LARGE
PRETENDING THAT'S NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS

I CURSE YOU!

broadband war - speed test round 1

I was thinking about getting an alternative to backup our home streamyx broadband, of which has been given us miserable access speed from time to time, and worse, when it went down, Telekom, the provder of Streamyx, often took days to rectify whatever problem it may be, if not weeks.

I am using a Celcom 3GX on my iPhone, which should give me, in theory, download speed of up to 3.6Mbps. I do not have a Maxis 3G, as well as Digi and U-Mobile 3G accounts. However, I am certain that Digi 3G not reaching my area, same to U-Mobile.

Of course, besides the 3G networks, we do have Jaring here. Jaring is offering fixed wireless service similar to Streamyx, but my consideration is to ensure that the connectivity is portable thus it can be our travel companion, I mean both my wife and me.

So I started a simple test today, on the 3 ISPs, i.e. Streamyx 1Mbps ADSL by Telekom. Although Telekom does offer 2Mbps and 4Mbps ADSL respectively, it does not cover our area.

Equipment I used as follow:
1. Sierra U8775 Mini Card OEM edition
2. Apple iPhone 3G
3. Macbook with 4GB RAM running Safari 4.02 browser.

Measurement was taken using Speedtest.net web-based application.

I choose to test at local time 03:00 to ensure that there are least people on these network at my area.

First, I tested Maxis 3G SIM with the Sierra U8775 MiniCard OEM version, followed by Celcom 3G SIM on iPhone 3G.

Then I swapped the SIM cards and tested again.

The average result is as follow. Depending on what you are looking for, i.e. speed or monthly commitment, Maxis is attractive in price but urgly when comes to facts where as Celcom 3G is comfortably out-performed Maxis.
